Funny paradoxes

Paradoxes are often funny when applied to daily life. Here are some such examples

Who shaves the barber?

Suppose there is a town with just one male barber; and that every man in the town keeps himself clean-shaven: some by shaving themselves, some by attending the barber. It seems reasonable to imagine that the barber obeys the following rule: He shaves all and only those men in town who do not shave themselves.

Under this scenario, we can ask the following question: Does the barber shave himself?

Asking this, however, we discover that the situation presented is in fact impossible:

  • If the barber does not shave himself, he must abide by the rule and shave himself.
  • If he does shave himself, according to the rule he will not shave himself.

"it's opposite day today" - game little kids play:

But if it's opposite day, then by using that expression one is really saying that it is not opposite day

if you took a picture for every unit of time of a basket ball being thrown towards a hoop, in all pictures it would be stationary. if it was stationary in all pictures, which make up every unit of time, then how is it possible that the ball is actually moving?

Omnipotent God

God is omnipotent (all-powerful) which means there is nothing God can't do.
So...can God build a mountain so large He can't move it?
If yes, then he CAN'T move it.
If no, then He CAN'T create it.
Either way, there is something He cannot do (therefore, paradox).

Day of death

A prisoner is told, "You will die within 10 days on a day that you will not be expecting it."

Well, it cannot be the 10th day, because if he will die within 10 days, and he is alive on the 10th day, he will expect to die on that day.

Since he cannot die on the 10th day (see above) , he cannot die on the 9th day either. Since he cannot die on the 10th day, if the 9th day comes, he will be expecting it.

Likewise, he cannot die on the 8th day or the 7th day , etc. all the way to the first day.

Choose the statement

You must make a statement. If it is true, I will choke you to death. If it is false, your head shall be cut off.
Answer: My head shall be cut off
If this is true, then you will be choked to death, which makes it false.
